U.S.: On Unannounced Afghan Trip, Mattis Says Taliban Showing Interest in Talks

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis said that the United States is detecting Taliban interest in talks with Kabul to end the war in Afghanistan, Reuters reported March 13. Mattis made the statement on an unannounced visit to Afghanistan, where he met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. Ghani said the new U.S. strategy in Afghanistan — which involves capitalizing on Taliban insurgents who have tired after years of fighting — has made some small Taliban groups more willing to begin negotiations with the Afghan government.
